Publishing

Justice Africa has a strong and growing component of education, research and publishing. This includes the following components.

Publishing high-quality and important books and pamphlets on African issues
Justice Africa Director Alex de Waal is series editor for the ‘African Issues’ book series, published by the International African Institute in association with James Currey and Indiana University Press. This is currently the largest selling publication series focussing on current African issues, including conflict, government, hunger, migration, the natural environment, youth, crime, etc. The expansion of this series is a major long-term aim.

Justice Africa is also producing a smaller, quicker and less scholarly pamphlet series entitled ‘African Arguments’, aimed at giving African scholars and policymakers and opportunity to raise controversial issues, and to stimulate debate and exchange of ideas.

See our recent publications and other titles for details of these.

Convening seminars on African issues

In coordination with the International African Institute and African higher education institutes, Justice Africa is helping to convene seminars on relevant issues in Africa, for example:

  • Local peacemaking in Africa: comparative perspectives;
  • The media in Africa;
  • Islamic humanitarianism in Africa.

These seminars aim to combine academic rigour with relevance to the challenges of policymaking, and to bring together local, national and international perspectives.

Providing opportunities for scholars and activists to develop their research and publishing activities

Justice Africa provides an environment in which African and non-African scholars and activists can develop their study programmes. Justice Africa is open to assist with helping to develop research proposals, secure funds and find publishers.

For example we are facilitating the publication of a book on the Nuba of Sudan, produced by the Nuba community themselves.
